“A new translation of this medieval drama will be performed for the first time on the South Quad in the shadow of the McFarland Memorial Belltower [University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign] on Friday, April 19th at 4:00 pm and Saturday, April 20th at 10:00 am. […]  It is directed by Kyle A. Thomas and sponsored by the Program in Medieval Studies, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Illinois Program  for Research in the Humanities. It takes place in conjunction with a symposium on “Performing the Middle Ages.”

The Play of Antichrist (Ludus de Antichristo) was composed at the Bavarian abbey of Tegernsee in the 1160s. It stages the sequence of apocalyptic events that will (according to medieval theologians) bring about the triumphant subjugation of all the world’s secular rulers, the coming of the Antichrist, and the conversion of the Jews prior to the Second Coming of Christ.”
